USS Pampanito in SF
San Francisco has many things to learn about when it comes to the ocean and water. One of the many historical things in SF on the water is the USS Pampanito. Similarly, there is the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, which we will talk about in another article.
History of USS Pampanito
The USS Pampanito is a Submarine of World War 2. Today it is a well visited floating museum at Fisherman’s Wharf. The historical Submarine often referred to as SS-383, is one of the many attraction centers located in the heart of the Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood.
If you are a marine fanatic, a military historian or just a person interested in how Submarines looks from the inside, the USS Pampanito is a place worth visiting. The historical Submarine, according to history, took out 6 imperial ships and damaged 4 others during the World War 2. Today, a National Historic Landmark, it hosts over 100,00 visitors every year who want to explore it. This historical monument is also preserved for future generations.
Seeing the submarine
The tour usually begins from the back of the submarine, where you find the torpedo room. It contains explosives from the World War 2. From the torpedo room, you climb the stairs leading to the two engine rooms. After the engine rooms are the sleeping quarters, where you will find the bunks the soldiers used during World War 2.
Executed mission plans took place in the planning room. This is the most interesting room on the ship. Being in the room gives a feeling of being part of the actual experience. You can also view the mess hall, the kitchen, dining room, offices, and the main deck.
You can enhance your experience of the tour by using the audio tour. It gives you precise history and information of every room on the ship. The audio tour costs an extra $5 for the device. It is definitely worth the price for the enhanced tour.
Admission
Admission tickets cost about $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, and $10 for children and military personnel. It is also free to access for active military personnel in uniform. The USS Pampanito is open for exploring every day, from 9 am until about 8 pm.
