History of the Nob Hill Neighborhood
For a century-long period, the Nob Hill neighborhood is associated with the upper crust, a name referring to the earliest settlers. Nob is a contraction that originates from the Hindu word nabob meant for a person who has amassed a large fortune from a different country in the East. The area’s nobs made fortunes from the West during the mid-1800s mainly from Gold, silver including the railroad.
Location
The place was initially covered in scrubs and its height from the waterfront offered a good escape away from the rowdiness of the boom town. It was later perceived as the new base for the newly rich residents in the area. To the north the neighborhood borders Russian Hill, on the south is Tenderloin, towards the west is Pacific Heights, and Chinatown on the east.
History
The Central Avenue was made part of Route 66 back in 1937, along the trajectory to Los Angeles from Chicago. During this time the Nob Hill neighborhood was just a growing area in Albuquerque's downtown area a few miles from the West. Nob Hill stretches along Central Avenue as a lively district bursting with various activities, from the food, nightlife, student life, and arts. The Nob Hill Shopping Center anchored this neighborhood when it was just beginning. This neighborhood grew around the center coming of age in the middle of the Century as a neon splashed area. Today businesses both the old and new share commitment to the retro style in the area. Architecture in Nob Hill
Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Collins Huntington, and Leland Stanford were among the first people here to build mansions in the 1870s. The bonanza kings such as Comstock Lode followed suit and the neighborhood earned the title ‘Hill of Palaces’. The grandiose wooden villas which burned during the 1906 earthquake stand as one of the reminders of this era. There is a proper setting of the sleek perambulators and poodles which are well-groomed to the west of Huntington Park. This centerpiece was a gift of the Crocker family as a copy of the ‘Rome’s Fountain of Turtles’. The Fairmont San Francisco Hotel opened back in 1907 has an elegant view with a history dating back then. Other impeccable sights include Huntington Hotel, Ritz- Carlton, Grace Cathedral, and the cable car tracks.

Nob Hill largely comprises an upscale residential area with a diverse mix of high society and industrious shop owners. The cultural lineup keeps changing constantly and an unexpected appeal of the many hidden historic gems. The generally affluent residents are quite friendly and welcoming to the tourists often offering help when one is lost. The best walking shoes are required if planning to get on a walking expenditure owing to the steep hill.
