de Young Museum in SF California

The de Young Museum is arguably the best art museum in the city of San Francisco. It is the most visited museum in the city and the 3rd most visited museum in the United States.

Started in the year 1895 and named after its founder, M. H. de Young, it is a place where every art enthusiast must decide to visit.

It features a collection of arts from the 17th to the 20th century from Africa, America, Oceania, Eskimo and the Pacific.

The museum also exhibits works of famous artists such as The Three Gems by James Turrel, Double Rainbow by Frederic Edwin. Other artists include Hover ll by El Anatsui, Claes Oldenburg, Joan Miro Frederick Church and more. The museum contains works including ceramic murals, photographs, sculptures, paintings and much more.

One of the things to check out while visiting the de Young Museum is the building itself. It is made completely insulated with copper and is a beauty to behold. The building also features a tower which gives the building a battleship look. Its also kind of looks like a ship out of Avatar the movie; or maybe Star Wars. Its a very cool building.

 

The tower is an observation tower and it is about 144ft tall. It 8s free to the public, whether you purchased an admission ticket to the museum or not. From the tower, you can enjoy Panoramic views of the city of San Francisco.

Reservations for visits can be made in advance especially for guided visits by making a purchase of the admission ticket.

de Young Museum Hours, Parking, and Ticket Information

Free parking is available within the Golden Gate Park. Reservation parking is available in the garage of the museum as well. The cost is about $3 per hour from Mondays through Fridays.

The museum also features a Cafe where you can grab a snack and relax. Interestingly, the admission ticket to the museum also gives you an admission to the Legion of Honor museum, as long as it is the same day.

de Young Museum is open to the public from Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 am to 5:15 pm and is closed on Mondays.
