Baker Beach

This is one of the public beaches in San Francisco’s Peninsula. A major recreational area for the locals of San Francisco California. Baker Beach is a shore on the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco’s northwestern region. It is close to a half mile long beach in distance, starting just south of Golden Gate Point. The beach moves further southward towards the Palace of the Legion of Honor, Seacliff peninsula and the Sutro Baths as well. The North part of the beach is known to be a common spot for nude sunbathers, and as such is considered a nude beach.

History of Baker Beach

This popular beach is a decent size chunk of the Presidio. It is formerly a base for the military from the inception of the city of San Francisco. The people that founded the base were from Spain in the year 1812 until the year 1997. In the year 1904, the baker beach was fortified with retracting guns that could disappear. These were known as Battery Chamberlin and you are still available for viewing today. Eventually, the Presidio was repurposed from a U.S Army base, into part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Notably, Baker Beach has only experienced one shark attack ever. No other shark attack has been recorded at the Baker Beach since then. The only shark attack known to be fatal was recorded in the year 1959 on May 7. The shark attack at this beach saw an 18-year-old teenager get maimed by a large great white. This teenager was Albert Kogler Jr. Due to the area, it was a relatively difficult time for the search and rescue to find his body after the attack.

Important Note

Do not try driving your vehicle onto the beach. Many people try driving on the beach, only to find themselves calling our towing company for a tow. This is because the tires bury themselves into the sand.
