Alcatraz Island in SF

Alcatraz Island is a 1.25 miles small island located in San Francisco Bay. It was originally developed as a federal prison, first for military prisoners as well as other notorious criminals. Later it became a tourist attraction.

History of Alcatraz Island

It operated within the years 1934 — 1963. During those years, it housed some of the most notorious criminals in the history of the United States A couple of these people include Al Capone and Robert Stroud.

It was later occupied by Native American activists. These activists were led by Mohawk Richard Oakes from 1969 until 1971. In 1971 they were forced to leave the Island by the federal Marshall. It was in the year 1972 that Alcatraz Island became a national recreational center and was opened to the public.

Current day Alcatraz

Today the Island is one of the most visited attractions in San Francisco. Daily tickets often sell out, and sometimes several weeks in advance. It is better to purchase admission tickets in advance. Tickets are charged from the private ferry service, and not from the island.

There are other interesting buildings and places on the island. Some of them include the Power House, Cell House, Water Tower, Recreation Yard, Warden’s house and club, and others.

Things to know when visiting Alcatraz Island

While visiting Alcatraz Island, eating and smoking are not allowed on site; however, the drinking of water is permitted. Possession of firearms is also not allowed on the island. Currently, the island is home to hundreds of pelicans, seagulls, and other seabirds. The Island was actually named after them — ‘Island of the Pelicans ‘. The birds are also not allowed to be touched or fed while you are on site.

All visitations to Alcatraz Island go officially through Alcatraz Cruises. During your visit, you will learn everything about the history of the Island. You’ll learn about its prisoners, the lighthouse, the Hopi people, and all other historical events that happened on the island. The tour begins from Pier 33 to the island and returns on the same route.

It is important to know that the weather on the island can be unpredictable, so it’s safer to go along with an extra layer of clothing in case it gets cold.
