The Legion of Honor is a museum in San Francisco. It is one of the most beautiful museums in the city.
According to history, the museum was a gift from the Spreckels family to the city in the year 1924. It was to honor the war heroes of World War 1. It was also built as a replica of the Legion of Honor – Legion d’Hommer in Paris, France.
Legion of Honor Artifacts and Artwork on Display
The museum is home to a huge collection of paintings, ceramics, ancient arts, individual works, paint, and sculptures. All these items are from the 16th to the 20th century. The Legion of Honor exhibits artifacts from all over the world; including Rome, Egypt, Greece, and Europe spanning well over 4,000 years.
Inside, you can see works of great artists such as Pablo Picasso, Van Dyck, Monet, and El Greco.
The museum also collaborates with other museums to exhibit their collections during its exhibitions. You also get to enjoy music and talks in the museum, especially on weekends.
Admission Fees and Other Information
There are admission fees to get into the museum on several days of the week. The museum is always open from Tuesdays to Fridays and is closed on Mondays. But there is free entry to the museum on the first Tuesdays of every month. Legion of Honor can be quite busy these days, so make sure to be there early.
The museum’s Cafe is also open on these days and you can grab a few refreshments from there while you are visiting the museum.
Pictures are allowed to be taken but it is regulated according to the rules of the museum. Sketches are also allowed, but you must have submitted a sketch permission form prior to the visit.
Another interesting thing to know is that once you get a ticket to the Legion of Honor, you are as well guaranteed admission to the de Young Museum, which is also another amazing museum to visit, as long as it is the same day.
