California Academy of Science in S.F. CA

The California Academy of Science started in the year 1853. This was a result of activities of various scientists. Over time it became a large museum that you see today.

The main focus of the research carried out in the building evolves around biology, anthropology, botany and environmental science.

California Academy of Science is a multi-billion dollar project hence the size of the building. It is home to a National History Museum, a research center as well as a Planetarium and Aquarium.

The museum is as well the oldest in San Francisco and houses over 20 million specimen of plants and animals.

The Rainforest within the academy is a must see. It contains recreated plants from diverse rainforest as well as different animals all behind a glass structure. Seeing the rainforest would leave you in awe.

Within the California Academy of science are other interesting places to see. They include the Steinhart Aquarium, African Hall, Living Roof and others. Just make sure to explore the entire museum, one at a time.

Hours, Directions and Other Information

The museum is open from  Mondays to Saturdays to the public from 9:30 – 5:00 and form 11:00 – 5:00 on Sundays.

Admission tickets cost about $25 to $40 to patrons between 4 years to adults, while it is free to children under 3 years old. They can be purchased online and picked up at the front desk, so you don’t have to wait in line to get them at the academy itself.

Entrance to the academy is free on certain Sundays of the year and certain days of fall and spring to San Francisco residents, so you can as well take advantage of this if you’re a resident of the city.

Located within the Golden Gate Park on the MLK Drive, it is an easy place to get to, as it is directly opposite the famous de Young Museum.
